PDC Thrust Bearing
PDC Thrust Bearing

There are usually three kinds of PDC (polycrystalline diamond compact) bearings: thrust bearing, radial bearing and combination bearing. PDC bearing is necessary for harsh environments, which is applied in turbo drills, mud motors, electric submersible pumps, RSS (rotary steerable system), oil field operations, et

Functions and Applications

 Advantages

  • Excellent Thermal Performance
  • High thermal conductivity lowers peak local temperatures to avoid heat-induced bearing degradation; low friction coefficient enables stable operation up to 233°C.
  • Strong Load & Impact Endurance
  • Works reliably across wide speed and load ranges, supporting loads up to 60,000 lbs at 100–6,000 rpm. High fracture toughness prevents shock damage.
  • Outstanding Durability & Corrosion Resistance
  • Superior wear resistance paired with immunity to corrosive agents in harsh drilling environments, delivering consistent long-term performance.
  • Simplified Equipment Operation
  • No dedicated lubrication required, removing the need for extra seals and lubrication systems to cut equipment complexity.
  • Markedly Extended Service Life
  • Service lifespan ranges from 1000 hours to several years, over six times longer than conventional tungsten carbide bearings.

Why Polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bearings?

Abrasive particles, high temperatures, corrosive chemicals, and high loads can all contribute to a failure in rotating equipment.

PDC bearings improve overall bearing reliability in harsh conditions while eliminating the need for seals.

PDC is not a diamond coating, but instead it is a thick, manmade diamond surface that is ideally suited for operation in process fluids where abrasive particles, like sand, can cause accelerated wear and failure with traditional bearing materials.

The Advantages of PDC

  • Efficient Heat Dissipation: High thermal conductivity cuts local peak temperature to prevent thermal damage to bearing components.
  • Wide Load & Speed Compatibility:Stably runs under varied working conditions, supporting max 60,000 lbs load at 100–6,000 rpm for oil & gas drilling.
  • Low Friction & Heat Endurance:Ultra-low friction coefficient of 0.01–0.03, with stable performance under temperatures up to 233°C.
  • Strong Shock & Corrosion Resistance: Great fracture toughness avoids impact damage; immune to corrosive media in complex working environments.
  • Simplified Structure & Extended Service Life:No dedicated lubrication, seals or auxiliary lubricating systems required; service life exceeds tungsten carbide bearings by over 6 times.

Because of its extreme hardness, PDC is ideally suited to resist wear from abrasive particles in lubricants and process fluids.
